SPECIAL PERFORMANCE TEST CLASS BULL
ARC Special Performance Test Class he following minimum standards, on a within-breed basis, qualify a bull for this class:
• minimum average daily gain (ADG) index 100;
• minimum feed conversion ratio (FCR) index 100;
• minimum weaning index 100;
• minimum scrotum circumference as per breed standard; and
• approved by the breeders' society concerned after inspection.
Nominations
Nominations for the class are done by the respective breeder’s societies from a list of bulls which qualified on the above-mentioned standards. Breeders' societies are allowed to nominate more than one bull for the class, in case a bull has to be withdrawn for a specific reason, provided that the final nomination is announced before a given date. Only one bull per breed can be entered for the class.
Judging Procedure
Animals undergoing performance testing are compared to each other by means of a calculated index. This index indicates the performance of an animal relative to the average performance of its contemporaries. The average index is always 100.
Index calculation in Phase C of the Scheme is done on a within-breed, between-herds basis per testing centre, because significant differences exist among breeds in respect of biological type and are, therefore not comparable. Similarly, indicies cannot be calculated across testing centres because of differences in climate. Since 1998 the final placement is done only on the judge's placing in terms of functional efficiency and appearance, without considering the bulls' performance. The reasons for this decision are:
• The performance of the bulls are already taken care of because only Gold and Silver Merit bullswith above average indices qualify for the class; and
• Breeders' societies can select the best bulls on functional efficiency and appearance without the fear that the bull will not stand a chance of winning because of not-so-high ADG and/or FCR indices.
This has the added advantage that breeders' societies can exhibit highly functional bulls |
